Born and raised in the Park Cities area of Dallas, Texas. Christian graduated from the University of Alabama with an undergraduate degree in Urban Planning/Real Estate and a Masters in Finance from Louisiana State University. Since 1992, his work career has centered around real estate or real estate finance; including brokerage, development and thirteen years in residential mortgage. During this time, Christian owned and operated various real estate and mortgage companies in addition to working at local banks and brokerage companies. As a mortgage professional, Christian was frequently awarded as a D Magazine Best Mortgage Professional and Texas Monthly 5-Star Mortgage Award.
Christian is proud to work with Neil Lyon and The Neil Lyon Group at Sotheby’s International Realty. The Neil Lyon Group is a top-producing team of brokers who have produced approximately $475,000,000 in closed sales transactions since 2005. Christian is involved in every aspect of the NLG’s business, assisting every seller and buyer.
Christian and his wife Christie, married since 1996, have two daughters at Santa Fe Preparatory School, where Christian is a member of the Board of Trustees. Prior to their move to Santa Fe and enrolling at Santa Fe Prep, his daughters attended Episcopal School of Dallas and Crested Butte Community School. In 2012, Christian and his family moved from Dallas to Crested Butte, Colorado. It was a great adventure that they will always cherish, however, after five years in Crested Butte, they decided that they wanted a larger town and shorter winters. After much research they found Santa Fe to be the perfect spot for their family and active and community-oriented lifestyle.
Christian is a passionate mountain biker and enjoys spending time with his family skiing, hiking, playing tennis, and enjoying the outdoors as much as possible. You can always find them appreciating the wonderful Santa Fe climate on a patio enjoying a nice meal at one of the many great restaurants in town.
My father was a real estate developer and investor in Dallas, Texas, so the business is in my blood. From a young age, I was exposed to the many facets of his business ventures that included development of retail strip centers and partnerships in retail centers and hotels. I can still remember the S&L crisis in the late 1980’s. Nearly everyone in the real estate field ended up returning their properties to the banks but my father always operated on the basis that a handshake was just as good as a contract. His word was his bond and his character would define him for the rest of his life. During this crisis, he managed to find ways to pay everyone back and then said he would never put that type of risk on the table again.
I like to think I inherited his integrity and his hard work ethic. At the very least, the effects of his true grit mentality, honesty and discipline have made a long-lasting impression on me and influence me daily. I have an older brother and sister and we all grew up in the Park Cities area of Dallas. We were a very close-knit family and we all enjoyed each other. The direction and boundaries that our parents established gave us room to room to grow and develop in an atmosphere that allowed us to make mistakes and learn from them. Our church has always been an important part of our life and also has shaped us to work and live honestly and ethically.
After high school, I went to the University of Alabama, where I majored in Urban Planning as I thought that was a great segue into following in my father’s footsteps in real estate. I returned to Dallas and went to work at a real estate development company and from there moved into commercial real estate.
In 1996 I married my wife, Christie. We have had a wonderful journey together – mostly due to her incredible patience with me! With five out of town moves, two kids, and lots of great family trips, our life together has been a true adventure. She is everything I am not in the artistic realms, although we share a love of hiking, skiing, being in the outdoors and NOT cooking! We have two teenage girls, Hallie and Hanna. They seem to be our true composites as they are naturals when it comes to outdoor sports and yet have a flair for color and design just like their mother.
After a year of marriage and working in commercial real estate, I returned to college at Louisiana State University for a Masters in Finance. After graduation in 1999, we headed back to Dallas to start work at a hotel development company. I inherited an entrepreneurial nature from my father, and decided to start a mortgage company in 2002 and stayed in the mortgage banking industry until 2013. At the same time, I ran a side business of purchasing and remodeling homes for resale.
Just like Santa Fe gives me the open space to enjoy the outdoors and its perfect climate, real estate gives me the leeway & freedom to cultivate more personal relationships with my clientele and to creatively apply all the variations of my education and training. It is a delight to lead clients to the mountain lifestyle by helping them to find that perfect home that will land them in the community.
In 2012, Christie and I decided (even though our Dallas friends thought us crazy) to move to the mountains of Crested Butte for a lifestyle change. We wanted a slower pace of life and more access to the vast outdoors and all the recreational pursuits it had to offer. I returned to my roots in real estate and joined a local boutique firm. During that time, I immersed myself in the glories of the outdoors and became a certified Wilderness First
Responder and Level 1 Certified Ski Instructor. My girls learned to bomb down ski mountains while Christie and I, who once led them around ski runs, now had to race to keep up with our not-so-little girls.
A two-year commitment to this new experience in Crested Butte stretched into five until we began to miss some of the social contacts and community available in a larger city. The girls schooling was now a priority and we are happy that our decision to move to Santa Fe gave them access to a strong learning environment and the advantages of attending Santa Fe Preparatory School, where I am now a member of the Board.
We have the best of both worlds here in Santa Fe with the Sandia’s, Sangre and Jemez mountains surrounding us on every side and a host of social, educational and cultural opportunities for all of my family. Since I still have connections in Dallas, it is a short trip to meet obligations with family, friends and colleagues when the time arises. I have been blessed with the resources to travel and live in a variety of contexts. As a family we love to visit new places and a safari to Africa is next on our itinerary. Each occasion to experience the world in this way, compounds my desire to give back to those who might not have the same opportunities. My life has been enriched over the years by an ethos of sharing that I learned from a close-knit community of friends, family and business colleagues. To this day, I am influenced by that exposure. It motivates me to support our schools and our church, as well as to contribute to programs and causes within our local community. The effects of these efforts are always so immediate and so gratifying.
But whether it is helping others enjoy the benefits of a mountain lifestyle, or ushering buyers and sellers through what seems to them to be the wilderness of a transaction, I love accompanying others on the adventure. We have a great town and I am thrilled to help others make that discovery.
